Silent Brass SB19 for Tuba

Hello Tubenters,

I am considering buying a Silent Brass SB19 for tuba.

It seems like the mute has been redesigned from a few years back...

Does anyone know off hand will this specific system fit well in either or both a PT-6 or 621F?

Are these things still breaking really easily?

Does it really work well?

They will fit very small to very big. Be aware that it may seem a little top-heavy in the 621. FWIW, I did not find anything to be fragile, but I was reasonably careful. The electronics are really unnecessary for tuba; you can hear yourself just fine. Need to reduce backpressure a little more? Unscrew and remove the mic - opens up about a 3/8 inch hole. I posted lengthy info on this some time back.

I use it all the time in my 3/4 size horn. Personally I can deal with the backpressure and the OK but not outstanding sound reproduction. For me, I need a solution so I can steal practice time when my two kids are in bed, and I finally have a moment to think/practice.

I will say that it does become important to intermix sessions with an open horn - I think that too much "mute time" might negatively affect the player's approach over extended time.

It does make the horn top-heavy - I've almost accidentally tipped the horn over when I set it in my K&M stand when I take a short break. With a little care though, it's not a big deal.
