Just taking a poll. I am in the market for an Eb and I like the MW 2141. You owners out there tell me what you have found with it. Is it really a good all around tuba? I am concerned it may not do too well in large ensembles, the low end may not come through. But I don't regularly play in big ensembles, so it may not be that big of a deal.
I already know I like the horn, I just don't want to get one and find some surprises later.

It depends on you and what you want it for. I have a Besson 983 that I bought over both 2141 and the Willson. I tried the Besson and M-W at the USABTEC earlier this year, and had tried the Willson earlier and decided that I liked the way the Besson played. All were very capable horns, and it really is a matter of personal preference.
I think that the Willson is probably a better all around horn if that were going to be your only horn. I was looking for something to contrast with my larger horn, and the Besson fit the bill for me.

Why I ply a Willson 3400 EEb.
After retiring from teaching I checked out many options for a single horn to enjoy during my senior years. I currently owned a Miraphone 5V EEb. I did not like the lack of depth of sound that the Miraphone produced and the fifth rotor set-up (-2/3) configuration. I also could not get use to the fact the fifth rotor was in my left hand. So I searched for a new horn and I purchased the Willson 3400 EEb. I selected the Willson because it produced a large enough sound to use with community bands/orchestras and had clear/clean enough articulation to use with chamber brass groups. I am totally enjoying exploring the many uses and sounds of this instrument. I believe that each EEb mentioned above is and excellent instrument. However, each instrument has it’s ideal us: Besson is best for Solo Work, MW 2141 is best for Chamber Brass, Willson is best as an All Around Tuba (good but not fantastic in any single area).
