Hey all,
Our web site is running a stream of one of our performances of Elliot Carter's "Soundings." There's a nice article on him (he turns 100 this year) as well. I post this here because of a nice lengthy tuba solo about 3/4ths of the way into the piece. I figured you all might get a kick out of hearing some new orchestral music with some tasty tuba writing....and, really, who wouldn't!?!?!?

The piece somewhat takes a jab at the conductor/pianist who likes to play paino concertos and conduct at the same time. The piece was written for Barenboim and the CSO (after Barenboim made a comment to Carter about his other "concerto" being too difficult to play/conduct). With this knowledge, you can surely find the dry humor in the piece.
As one of my colleagues exclaimed after a rehearsal, "That's baby-makin' music."

Re: A little Elliot Carter
Thanks so much for posting, Andy. Nice piece--and nice playing on the solo! I especially like how the percussion sneaks in there, bringing it back to the orchestra.
