if this were 4 or 5 months ago i'd agree and tell you to get a baer mouthpiece. However, after a summer with bluecoats I was able to bring back one of the few karl hammond tuba mouthpieces and try it with my 1291. For the past summer they were redesigned into what I think should become a standard mouthpiece for the 1291. I've tested both the baer and hammond mouthpiece for various professors and fellow music students. Every time the hammond was the choice. This is how they describe it

This tuba mouthpiece designed for the Bluecoats, has a cup similar to the Geib but with a more open entrance to the throat. It is a flatter rim with a .323 throat and our standard backbore. This mouthpiece is extremely versatile throughout the range of the horn and produces a even, dark sound.

to my knowledge they aren't available from retail, but i couldn't imagine you can't get one made with a nice email to mr. hammond

Also, for those who play the 1291, is the G at the bottom of the staff like extremly flat.

Yeah, like 20 cents or more. Notes to check below that G include (in descending order): e, d flat, g. Notes to check above that G include (in ascending order): a, d, e, e flat, g, and a flat.

Some of these may be just my horn, but I have heard that other 1291 owners have had the same intonation problems.
