I have my outlet here and on a couple of other forums that cater to my particular interests. My wife and son have a facebook page, and that's fine for them. My wife is doing very well on Dragon Wars, etc. My son is keeping in touch with his friends.

As for me, no.

My wife finally quit bugging me about it and actually created a profile for me. Then she e-mailed a bunch of people and told them to check out my profile. When I opened my Outlook the next day to find friend requests from dozens of old friends and family members, it was too late to turn back. I've been able to catch up with a lot of old friends from high school, the Marines, college, and various musicians I've played with over the years. Not to mention a bunch of "tuba friends" from all over the world.
I can totally see where Wade is coming from, and agree that it's a good policy to try to keep some level of privacy. I've turned down more than a few friend requests from folks I don't know, especially if we only have one or two friends in common and I don't really know those people either. (Guilty of accepting friend requests from just about anyone with a tuba in the avatar. ) One dude even had a pic of himself (I assume) flipping off the camera! <ignore> :!:
Anyhow, I will also welcome friend requests from TubeNet folks, but do please mention in a message what your handle here is, if it's different from your FB name. (Mine isn't.)

Mike and elephant ..... just remember you have some control over the security of your Facebook account. You can make it impossible for anyone to see anything other than your name and picture. This will prevent complete strangers from seeing all your personal info and pictures . I too don't have anyone on my friends list I don't want including some family members. I have decided to use facebook as a way to keep in touch with the people I want to keep in touch with...... period ! I put a lot of family pictures on my profile too ..... not for the public comsumption.
I recently broomed a few members off my lists that I just never have any contact with. This is includes some well known people in the tuba/euph world. Friends and family only for me.

There's a lot of info I do not share on Facebook, though I have a lot of Facebook friends.

No one can see my address, my phone number, my birthday, or any real relevant personal info.

It's a great place to share photos, and to find old friends that I would have otherwise never (most likely) gotten in touch with again.

I've had more problems from MySpace in terms of people I have no clue as to who they are, adding me as a friend. I generally get the dorn stars who want me to be their friend for other reasons than friendship...not gonna happen. I know about 99% of my 876 friends on Facebook, either by knowing them in person or they are in my fraternity and at another college (the other 1% are guys named Matt Smith...us Matt Smith's have to stick together). I try to verify if they are in the frat if I don't know them. It's been kinda crazy with trying to keep up with these folks since Facebook became global and let everyone join. I've been on for 5 years, back when it was strictly for college students and I was happy with 75+ friends...lol

Speaking of Facebook, Myspace, and such...

How many of you have seen the recent development with the City of Bozeman requiring job applicants to provide their social networking usernames and passwords? I just caught it on the news this evening and am still angry about it. (http://montanasnewsstation.com/Global/s ... S=10551414)

First of all, the TOS of these sites typically require the user to agree not to share their login information. Additionally, which really gets me, is that allowing some city government access to one's Facebook account also gives them access to any friends one may have...which seems absolutely unacceptable. Not only does this affect the applicant, but also puts any friends' (worldwide might I add) private information in jeopardy.

What were job applicants required to do before this crazy development...carry around a camcorder for a week while recording all phone conversations and forwarding all emails?

Sorry for the rant.

Edit: Just checking up on the same news site...it looks like the City had to give in and change their policies   (http://montanasnewsstation.com/Global/s ... S=10558291)
