Mira 186 vs. 187

Post by Tundratubast »

It seems the 186 BBb is the most popular of these two horns, Why is this? It seems that the darker Kaiser sound of the conical bugle on 187 would be more popular. Could someone please elaborate on the playing differences' in these horns Thanks

Short version is that the 187 can take more air and has a bigger, broader, darker sound, as you have already guessed. The difference is not huge, but definitely noticeable. The bottom bow and bell throat (in fact all the tubing after the valves) are fatter, but the horn ends in the same diameter bell flare as the 186. I have played the 186 in BBb and CC and the 187. If you want more info on the 187, search "187" under my user name. I've posted several observations about this horn. I used to own a 187 BBb and also a 186 in CC. I currently own a 186 BBb, which I am selling since I fell in love with a 20J.

As far as the popularity aspect of it, the 186 has been around a lot longer. The 187 is not widely known, but I consider it hands-down to be superior to the 186 for players who want a larger sound.
