THEY'RE HERE!! The 'Petruschka' Piston F Tubas at Brasswind!

Post by bisontuba »

HI-
Just came back from Brasswind, and THEY'RE HERE--The new Miraphone 'Petruschka' piston F tubas are in stock. Their web site is wrong (it says they are on order--WRONG--they are in! & it says free shipping--WRONG--shipping is additional!) and is not currently functioning correctly. Many of you were at ITEC last year, and played the 'prototype.' This month I have played 4 silver and 6 lacquer 'Petruschka' F's. I was hoping to find a horn 'just like the prototype'--which I thought was incredible. I did select/bought a horn this morning that I think was just as good or better (hard to believe!) than the prototype :D --in other words, the prototype did become a great production model!!!! The batch I played was very consistent--typical high standard for Miraphone. With Brasswind's current computer glitches, just call & deal with Roger Lewis directly. Roger was great as usual--I had the back warehouse all to myself for play testing--not one bit of 'salesman' stuff--Roger is such a joy to deal with. But for those of you who want a Petruschka ASAP like I did--just don't call Roger at Midnight--wait until the morning. :lol: Thanks again Roger, and--- to all you Tubeneters looking to get one of these--have fun!!
I forgot--the 'Blokepieces' work great on this horn!

Hi-
Forgot to mention that while I was there, Brasswind did have a couple of big 6/4 CC's at a real good price--they have a Neptune which I think(?) they'll move for $5,000 and a 2165 which I think(?) they'll move for $7,000. I did not play them, but contact Roger directly if interested. I did see a used 1291 BBb tuba which I think(?) they will move for $5,000 too. BTW, they do get an occasional Gronitz in, and I did see in the 'tuba' room a silver 6/4 PCK--not sure of the price--contact Roger if interested. Hope this helps some folks.

PS My Petruschka has arrived here at home and it plays better each time I pick it up--HIGHLY recommended! :D

Congratulations on your new Tuba.

May I ask, How much was the Neptune for? Only 5,000? What was its condition?

I'm asking because Mr. Tuba sells one for 12,000 pounds.

I just played one yesterday that was in here for minor repairs. (Maybe the owner will post some pics...It has a pretty nice raw brass patina.) The only real intonation issues at all (with that particular instrument) were the classic sharp 6th partial F and F#. (Both of the open G's were spot-on in-tune, as were all the C's and the open E.) An in-tune alternate for the 6th partial F on that tuba is 1-3 and an in-tune alternate for the sixth partial F# is 2-3. With those two alternates (necessary when sustained only), one could probably just HOLD the tuba with the left hand and leave the slides alone ! :shock:

That particular tuba could (imo) benefit from the model 45 (F) mouthpipe, as the low range (with the original over-size mouthpipe) tended to "vacuum" my lungs.

=====================================================================

In summary, some 2165 tubas - intonation-wise - are quite wretched, while others are nearly exquisite.
I had fun hanging around with you on Friday. Thank you for the kind words about my tuba. I will take some pictures and post them. BTW, it definitely plays differently now they we removed the "Tone Socks" from the bell. I noticed it immediately when I play tested it at your house. It won't take too much to adjust. I agree, the low range could be a little easier to articulate.
