Just got my stuff! a little HORN dorn

Post by Casey Tucker »

hey guys,
I just got my Petrushka and gig bags from Hornguys.com (Ferguson Music) and I have to say they were EXTREMELY helpful. They took care of everything! The bags fit my horns very well and look amazing, The horn is pristine, and everything was packed so well that everything came in one piece. I will be a repeat customer and would recommend their services to anyone. here's a few pics for right now. I'll get some more in-depth pictures later.

Congrats on the horn, Casey!

My instructor has a lacquered version of the Petruschka and it is such a magnificent horn! I'm planning on buying one of those sometime in the future.

I've heard that there are different sound characteristics between the silver and lacquered versions of the horns. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi-
Just my 2 cents worth. Last month, having tried 4 silver and 6 lacquer piston Miraphone F's, I have to say I was surprised--while I intended to buy a silver version, the lacquer horns, IMHO, were just like the prototype at ITEC last year (which again, IMHO, was my ideal F tuba--think beauty of sound of an Alex F with the low range of a big Yamaha F and the ease and slotting of a B&S Symphonie F), but the silver horns, while very, very nice, just had a different sound characteristic for me--hence, I bought a lacquer version and am very happy with it. Sound is amazing--so beautiful, pitch is wonderful, everything slots great, screaming high range & incredible low range, so easy and fun to play--need I say more...... :D HOWEVER, when spending the kind of money new European horns cost today, the very best thing to do is go to MidWest/Army Tuba Conference/2010 ITEC/Brasswind/Hornguys, etc. etc.--and try them and/or others yourself. Also, have someone listen to you and you listen to them (playing the horns), or take something like a Zoom H2 and record and listen to yourself on the various instruments before deciding. Hope that helps.
Regards-

as far as characteristics go between silver/lacquer i can't really tell a huge difference. the low range locks right in. the low C/Bb is solid and the upper register just sings. intonation is good. the low F# is a little squirly but it's easy to fix. i don't pull slides if that's any indication. my main slide is out about an inch. i couldn't be more pleased. I would recommend this horn to anybody looking for an F that can really put out some sound!

EDIT: (forgot to add) However, I'm not a huge fan of the thumb ring. I can't adjust it and it's a little high. I'm thinking of getting an adjustable ring (similar to those on the VMI's and PT tubas) to replace it.

Casey-
My horn has an adjustable thumb ring--are you sure you don't have one on yours? All the ones I tried had it.

Mark,
the thumb ring is fixed to the fastener (i don't know of any other way of explaining it). i'll try to get some pics up.

EDIT: just checked. I can change the angle of the ring which should help. lol
