Chickens

Post by Tubachin »

My wife has wanted chickens (egg layers) since forever (never knew), and we will be the proud owners of some chicks in April. I have framed out a 4'x8' chicken coop and we are discussing plans for the run, nesting boxes, roosts, feed, water, etc...

Since our decision to raise chickens, I have found many others that enjoy the same hobby and love the fresh "farm" eggs and rich compost. I am wondering how many Tubanetters are also chicken farmers and if you have any advise for future owners of 8 to 10 chickens.

Thanks...

We NEED to see a picture of the "bloke" petting a chicken. Maybe a little "peck" on the cheek as well. BTW I definitely said chicken not chick. Wouldn't want you to use that excuse to get off easy. Yes, petting a bloomin' chicken whilst gazing in the camera lense and smiling. Can't wait!
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

we have a couple chickens at home. unless it regularly stays in the single digits, they don't really need heat. But they will need a water source that doesn't freeze.

as far as keeping the coop from becomeing a nasty smelly chicken poop hole in the universe.....wood shavings, a nice thick layer on the floor, and fluff them periodically, and take out some and replace with more periodically (every month or two).

Give them lots of sunshine, and they will lay more and longer each year. Give them table scraps (especially fruit, veg scraps). I agree that unless you have either a real big yard, or are in town to not let them be fully free range.

Chickens have a higher entertainment value as pets than you might think.

My wife and I have discussed a small backyard chicken coop. For those who keep chickens, what do you do if you leave town for a week or so? Or do you just never leave town?
