Always good to be smacked in the face once a while. Thanks Joe.

Or, using Bloke's figures as a reference, keeping it as a 3v BBb and fixing it up to play well would be under $1.5 K unless the valves are shot. Worth that much? Your call...

Sometimes it's better to leave things as they are...

Hi, I'm George and I'm a senior in highschool. I'm brand new to TubeNet (but have always read the posts).

I bought this Antique Grand Rapids Line tuba because I'm heading to college and currently don't have my own tuba (nor the money to buy a decent used horn). So I thought I'd gamble on an old one that needs some work; really I just want to be able to continue playing.

I'm still waiting for it to arrive, but once it does I'll post how it plays(is at all)

It's worth $650 as a pretty-sounding 3-valve BBb tuba that needs about 30 minutes of bell flare repair.
George, come back and tell us how it plays. It might need just a little bit of repair and a lot of polishing to make it a dandy horn.

I think the point of the thread is that sometimes it's better to just leave things like they are rather than plan to make a host of custom modifications. If the 'York sound" is there, it will be there with the original BBb tuning and 3 upright valves. And it's the sound that is important.
