Hello Everyone!
Next week I will be performing my DMA lecture recital on the University of Kentucky campus. The recital is entitled “Banda Sinaloense: A brief history through performance and the tuba’s significance in the ensemble”. It will feature original banda sinaloense arrangements that I have gathered from my research trips to Sinaloa, Mexico along with some arrangements of more recent banda repertoire which demand more technical requirements in the sousaphone part. The music will be performed by a 14 piece group assembled from the UK School of Music with myself performing tuba and sousaphone. The lecture portion will discuss the introduction of the tuba and sousaphone to Mexico and the historical background and influence of both military and brass bands through the French-Austrian occupation of Maximillian I and later the Presidency of Porfirio Diaz. I hope to see you there if possible. It should prove to be an interesting experience and a definitely a first at UK.

Prof. Salas, this is right up my alley and I wish I were close enough to attend. This is definitely the most interesting (i.e. a new, different, and, for once, relevant) topic I've heard of being covered in this setting.
If you plan on recording the recital, would it be possible for me to obtain a copy (I'm interested in both the lecture and the playing)? I very much enjoy listening to Spanish-language radio (I currently reside in Los Angeles and now have many stations to choose from!) and hearing different groups and different styles of popular Mexican music.

Thanks!
I'll definitely have a recording made and I'll probably post it on my university website. I'm also working on this for my dissertation topic studying the history of performance practices on this music starting with the concert tuba through the introduction and use of the sousaphone including some biographical information of many of the original tuba players in Mazatlan and Culiacan and some of the tubist who play in many of the more well known bandas currently touring the US. I should be done with that over the holidays. I've had the topic in mind for years and I'm glad to finally get it done.

I would also be very interested in hearing the presentation - I have been collecting Banda recordings since the 1970s - great stuff, even when it is a bit "rough!"
It is good to hear banda on the radio here in the Bay Area (KRZZ 93.3 ) and in Seattle (KDDS 99.3) on the FM radio - much clearer than all the low power AM stations.
