Conn Vintage Photo “Curiosity” ?

Post by mammoth2ba »

Very interesting series of 43 photos showing C.G. Conn’s 1911 Elkhart, Indiana factory is featured on Daniel Oberloh’s site:

http://www.oberloh.com/gallery/Connfactoryimages.htm" target="_blank

One “curiosity” though, is that the very last image showing C.G. Conn’s private office has what appears to be a March calendar on the wall. Perhaps the photo was made in 1910, in which March 30 would have been a Wednesday (March 30, 1911 was a Thursday).

However......March always has 31 days, not 30 as shown on the calendar. It doesn’t appear from the website image that anything is covering a 31 date. Anybody have one of those original cards, and able to make out a different month....or perhaps something is shown covering the 31 date on a higher-resolution image :?:

Cropped portion of that image is shown below:

Not so curious - look closer. The top pages of the calendar weren't ripped completely. It could have been June, or September or something.

Ah!

If that’s the case, perhaps November 1910......since no other month with 30 days, following April, has a 30th that falls on a Wednesday in 1910 or 1911.

Would have confused me to have my office calendar still showing March in November!

I have a sneaking hunch that he usually knew what month (and probably what year) he was in at the moment, likely even which date, but might need to look to see what "next Tuesday" or "two weeks from yesterday" was.

But what ensemble is featured in the framed photograph just below the calendar?

I would like to know who was Conn's favorite group?

I have a feeling that photo is from Chicago Orchestra Hall. Could well be wrong.

I suspect the Sousa band would have been among his favourite groups with the Marine Band somewhere in the mix.
