TubeNet Android/iPhone App!!!

Post by Kevin Lilley »

What is the possibility of getting an app in the Android Market or iTunes for TubeNet? Is one in production? When is its projected release date? I think this would be a neat idea, and would allow for more responses to posts for those who do not have constant access to their PC/Mac. For instance I am generally on the move and my HTC Incredible is my primary way of accessing the internetz.

TubeNet works well enough on most phones as-is, I don't think there's a need for it. Sometimes, ya just don't need an app for everything, can't a web page just be a web page? :-)

But an Android App would format it for mobile screens - like mobile internet sites. I can read this on my Droid but would like an app.

I do agree with you about using the website to its full purpose. But, in todays day and age the availability of applications seems to be more appealing to many people in terms of ease-of-access. Though the forum runs from sponsorships and donations, providing the application with some advertisement would allow for more income to the site to allow for more possible features. The whole idea is still 6 one way and half-a-dozen the other, but it is giving more people what they want without any financial loss Which is always a good business strategy). Not to mention the amount of publicity it would give to the forum. Personally I did not know about this site until I was told about it from my instructor my 3rd year in college. I would have found this to be a tremendously useful tool in the very beginning of my tuba-ing.

Nice amount of discussion, but with things like cross-platform formatting an application would make it much simpler to access this service. I still agree that the site is functionable in the web browser. However as I noticed in the link, situations such as having to resize the image could be avoided with a functioning mobile application.

TubeNet is a website and not likely to ever evolve into an app.

As a point of comparison - I am a member of a great bass forum called talkbass.
They have an app, but I don't think it provides too much more value than using tubenet from the browser on my iPhone (which I do often).
Easier to browse things, but short on ads, so may be harder to justify the expense.

I have used apps before that are front ends to several website. Every single app I have used has not worked as well as going to the website itself on the phone. The apps were more useful perhaps when phones had lousy web browsers but most phones have evolved to be pocket laptops with pretty good presentations of websites including this one.

I am not per se opposed to someone else possibly enjoying an app but writing one is not in my current skill set and not something I believe worth the pursuit.

I use Invision's iPhone app with my alma mater's sports message board. While it works great for most purposes, it has two major failings:

1. Advertisements are not visible within the app. Recent changes to have more prominent ad placement had to be rolled back because they resulted in total loss of functionality for the mobile app users.

2. Subtitles (which don't exist here but do on invision boards) are not visible, thus rendering entire threads a mystery.

Just glancing around the interwebz, I see add-on scripts for phpBB boards that will allow mobile app access, but I don't have any personal experience with them.
