Mike McLean practice mutes

Post by UTSAtuba »

I was wondering if anyone's tried the Mike McLean tuba practice mute. Also, any thoughts on the Wallace practice mute. I believe Mark had bought one, but unfortunately I'm having a difficult time locating one...

I have the McLean dual purpose mute for Eb 3+1 compensating British tubas. There are 4 parts. which can be stored inside each other Russian doll style. There is one tip for the practice mute function and one for the straight mute function. I mostly use the practice mute function, which aside from the intended size of tuba, my Besson 981, also works on my 1970 Besson New Standard BBb, my 1923 Boosey F 3+1 comper, and, barely, in my 1870 Besson 3+1 Eb non-comper. Tuning is reasonable, but I find the practice sound on the bright side, so I put a towel loosely in the ridge between mute end bell.

I guess the overall function of the various Schlipf models would be better, but I did not want to buy several of those very expensive mutes.

For the price (it was about £120 for all parts when I tried them, not sure about now though) they were very good. I didn't notice any tuning issues on my York, and the only reason I didn't buy a set there and then is because it was the same day I spent £4000 on my York and this was all my monies then (poor student - first tuba).

Definitely worth it I felt.

HI-
Check Hickey's Music in Ithaca, NY to see if they have any of the old Wallace tuba practice mutes still in stock.
