Smoky Timbre

I'm a fan of that smoky sound one hears out of certain trumpets like the Martin Committee and some of the French trumpets of that era. Think Miles or Chet Baker playing "My Funny Valentine." I've also heard this timbre produced from tenor trombones at times.

Is there a way to get that sound from a tuba? Is it a matter of technique? Mouthpiece? Particular brand/model of tuba?
