Hey Everyone,
I was approached by a conductor today who wanted to work with me. Unfortunately, we didn't get far beyond that.
I was just wondering if people could throw out suggestions for Brass choir (large enough to be conducted, small enough to facilitate finding people to play), or concertos for Tuba and String orchestra (or concertos that have accompaniments adapted for string orchestra).
Basically the qualifications are...
1) large enough to be conducted
2) somehow involving the tuba
3) Personnel is not too large or ridiculous since we would actually have to find these people (he has assured me he could find strings though)
Thanks in Advance!

Torbjörn Iwan Lundquist's Landscape, tuba strings and piano? The great premiere recording with Michael Lind and the SRSO from the album The Virtuoso Tuba and some talk about the piece here.

If you do the Frackenpohl, I'll shoot you a better cadenza.

Hi Bo!
Koetsier's Concertino is written for string orchestra. A recording of Mike Forbes is available on his Koetsier CD.
Also by Koetsier is a brass symphony. It is a three movement thing with tuba, horn, 3 trumpets and 3 trombones, I think. It is a nice piece that has some difficult stuff but is not by any means impossible. Like his other material it is largely tonal and in a neo-romantic style and form.
Also consider Jan Krzywicki Fantasy for Tuba and Strings. Written for Abe Torchinsky. I'm not familiar with this piece, but Krzywicki's concerto is pretty bad ***.
Jost Meier also has Eclipse? Finale for tuba and chamber orchestra. It is available thru editions BIM.
I also seem to remember that Gordon Jacob's Tuba Suite had a string accompaniment. Can anyone else verify that?
Best of luck to you, and keep us posted on what comes of this connection!

Vagn Holmboe wrote a piece called "intermezzo concertante" for tuba and strings. Published by whelhem hansen. It's currently only available in a special order manuscript edition. Jens Bjorn Larsen recorded it on a CD of Holmboe's brass concertos probably a decade ago. Great piece, 1 movement, very lyrical about 8 minutes long.

Enrique Crespo (of the German brass) wrote a nice ten piece brass arrangement (4trp,2hn,3trb,1tba) of one of the Romanian dances by Ionel Dumitru.

This is by Thomas Stevens, not John Stevens, FYI. It is available through Editions BIM, just like John Stevens, though.peter birch wrote:John Stevens Variations in an Olden Style is available with strings
