Wish Me a Happy 50th Birthday

Post by iiipopes »

Yes, as of 1:47 a.m. (so my Mother tells, me -- I, of course, don't have any conscious memory of the event, and she still teases me about keeping her up all night...) on December 8, 2011, I will celebrate my 50th birthday. As I am the first guy on my Dad's side of the family to know about antithrombin disorders, as medical science has only known about them for a generation or so, and since I am only the second guy in the family to live this long in over 100 years, it is worth celebrating publicly. Thanks to that miracle of that rat poison, also called coumadin or warfarin, keeping the clotting under control, and heparin to dissolve what has clotted, everything is stable, and my family and I are looking forward to many more years, and hopefully my son will be the first in our family in over a century to actually grow to maturity with his Dad still alive.

Now, to the extent Sean will allow, you can wish me a happy birthday by posting pictures of good beer, good food, tasteful other pictures  , etc., as we all used to do until the bandwidth consumption just became too great and Sean had to clamp it down. Thanks, Sean, in advance, for this minor indulgence.

If you were a woman, you would be 39.

Hi Scott

Congratulations on your milestone.
I've been told that the second fifty goes faster than the first.

Happy Birthday and congratulations on finding a way to overcome your family's medical history.

As another member of the "North of 50" club AND a fellow December birthday boy, I was saying something related to this subject to my wife yesterday...

I want (need?) a 6/4 tuba while I'm still young enough to enjoy it and exploit it!

Bloke, I'm honored you were the first to post. Thanks. In celebration of the day, I wore all black to work as well. The video was great! I've tried to play laying down. It takes about twice the effort with no gravity to help the intercostals do their thing. And all of you are correct: I am the cook, and we make it a point to eat in, not out. Unless it's catching a $1 burger on the way to something like my son's Scout Troop meeting, about the only times we eat out are when I get gift certificates for my birthday. If I lost about 20 pounds and put a little color back in my hair, I could almost pass for 39. Here's hoping life really does begin at 50; fortunately, my wife has not asked to trade me in on two 25-year olds! Instead of getting a 6/4 tuba, last year I got a double bass and learned it "from scratch" for my dance band. Last week we played our two regular Christmas gigs, one for a department store invitation sale and the other for a ballroom dance club. We were very well received, and had the contracts for next year before we even finished the gigs! Of course, I've played bass guitar since the summer of 1976 as an 8th grader in summer band camp, but DB and EB are like the UK & the USA: two great instruments separated by a common tuning; two great countries separated by a common language.

Let's see, milestones on this date: John Lennon was killed. We declared war on Japan. Pope Pius IX declared the dogma of Mary's Immaculate Conception. And George Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware.

Thanks again! :tuba:

How wonderful to blaze such a trail in your family.

Thanks. Finding out about the antithrombin disorder did take some of the wind out of the sails of some of the family legends, however, like the one where my great grandfather supposedly fell off his horse & buggy "dead drunk" on the way home from the saloon, and how another great great uncle "just dropped dead in the middle of the street" one day. We now know that a clot hit each of them, not the whiskey or the "walking pneumonia," and they were dead before they hit the ground.
