The story on ATC was pretty good and it does note the financial costs these thefts cause the school.

This has happened at my shop on more than one occasion (although not with a Tuba).
Here is what will happen. A local customer will purchase something uncommon and somewhat special. It will get stolen. The thief will come to the shop and attempt to sell said special instrument and HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS OR THAT IT IS SPECIAL.
BIG RED FLAG.
Also, we keep sales records going back to the 1970's...so we know who bought it.

The tuba that was stolen from The University of Evansville (and recovered here) is a 202N... serial number 3946.
