Anybody reading the Harvey Phillips (auto)biography, "Mr. Tuba" which came out recently? What a great environment Harvey had to learn in. Bill Bell renting him a room in his home, paling around with the working musicians of New York, playing with everybody. Students can't get that anymore.
I'm up to the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra time period in the book right now. I found a couple of youTube videos ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mExpGyauWGc )of the S-F Orchestra that were great, if you can get past the decidedly low-key introduction of Bill Finegan. I think the tubaist in those videos is Jay McAllister who was a fine musician in his own right.
