I contacted him and told him what it is and its normal value if it is working properly, based on the condition it seems to be in in his photos.

..... But these are not worth five grand used, especially if it ended life as a wall hanger. Who knows what horrors this tuba can produce if it ended up treated so poorly? And then it might end up being a real gem. One never knows on eBay. I hope the seller takes my advice and lowers his price to about $3,000. then it *might* sell...

I told the seller that I doubt he could get more than $1000 if he couldn't comment on the playing condition of the instrument. I said he could get more if it was inspected by a repair technician and judged playable. Otherwise it would remain a wallhanger.

You have to wonder though, if it has been a wallhanger for at least 10 years, and the previous owner left it there, was it a even playable to start off with?

The main difference between the two sellers is that one knew nothing about tubas and the other makes it his business to try and know enough so his products will sell quickly. B&S (leaving the buyer to assume "Made in Germany") is a lot more appealing than saying probably "Made in China". Quinn's business is an eBay music instrument business, his instruments have to be priced and described "right" so that they sell quickly. Go to a store and try to find descriptions like "Wow", "Excellent", "Amazing" etc, in the main instrument descriptions. As you said about eBay, its the emotional fact being tapped into with his auctions descriptions and enthusiasm.

FWIW, I'm not surprised that he didn't believe you about the origin of that tuba. On a certain level he might see you as a competitor out with some kind of agenda.
