Fat?

Post by Tuboss2 »

Hey guys I'm back again. There's something I've been trying to get but could never really understand. I watch a lot of youtube Sousaphone fanfare videos(VSU horsepower, BCU, and some high schools among many others). In the comment section, theres always people who mention how 'fat' they sound or how thick and round there Low F's are. So my question to you guys is; what is a Fat tuba sound like? I love when tubas are hammering out low F's at FFF dynamic. Pretty darn amazing. Takes a crap load of air to do it. Plus I figured out it takes a crap load of air to get it out.
2nd question is...How could you get your low range out at high volume? I figured doing low note high dynamic warm ups every day during band class would probably help, what else would y'all suggest. Thanks and keep honkin'!

Mouthpieces like the LM-12 maybe? Just a thought.
And the picture...excuse my lack of humor but I don't get it. :(

Fat's got to be the opposite of thin, right? Get a hard, thin sound, and you're halfway there - just do the opposite.

I must disagree with this post. Arnold Jacobs did not have that large of a vital capacity, due to childhood illness. What he did have was a superlative control of that vital capacity.

And a willingness to refill it often, and quickly. So, the guy shouldn't be shown swallowed down to his knees. Maybe just his waist.

Had a little 1 on 1 impromptu session with my director, here's what he told me:
That my embouchure when I play low at a Loud volume isn't always set which delays the note start for like a beat or so. I didn't really notice that until he pointed it out to me as I was playing. He was like: "your note doesn't start right away" and your face is moving.

Another problem he pointed out to me was that My tongue isn't behind my teeth which gives me a "rown rown rown rown" sorta sound. Happens when I am playing at louder dynamics.

How do I fix that guys?
