This is really awesome! It will be a real treat to get to hear Sam with such a great quintet. I was thinking how cool it is that Sam is replacing his former student, Andrew (I'm fairly sure that Andrew studied with Sam at ASU). Then I realized that Sam was also the teacher of some of the other former Boston Brass tuba players. My recollection of the chronological order of Boston Brass tuba players is: Velvet Brown, Andy King, Randy Montgomery and then Andrew Hitz (someone please correct me if this is wrong). I think Velvet Brown and Andy King both studied with Sam at BU.
I think Sam is one of the most under rated tuba players. His work with Empire Brass was superb and Traveling Light was excellent - I would speculate that Traveling Light XMAS album has got to be the most widely bought tuba recordings by the mainstream public . I still think his ITEC 95 session on jazz improvisation is one of the best clinics/masterclasses I've ever attended. I look forward to hearing his work with The Boston Brass. Superb player and teacher.
