Seattle Symphony local Tuba AND Euphonium sublist auditions

Post by Chris Olka »

Hey guys and gals, it's that time again. We have scheduled the sub-list auditions for Saturday, December 7th, at Benaroya Hall. The audition will start around 4:00 PM and go until about 7:00 PM.

This audition is for the local tuba AND euphonium sub list and the SSO reserves the right to dismiss audition candidates not meeting the highest professional standards.

I have held these auditions in the past and would like to answer a few questions that always come up. First, if you do not live in the Seattle Metro area should you audition? Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen and want to be considered for the sublist. However, if you live more than 2-3 hours away, it may not be worth your time in many instances to come to the audition. On many occasions when we need a sub it is when I am sick and it is a last minute thing or there are two different services scheduled at the same time(kiddie concert and opera for instance). However, if you still want to audition AND we have enough time slots, by all means come. There may be situations where, depending on the candidates level of playing, you might be invited to play 2nd tuba or something more substantial. Second, is it screened? No, because of the cost incurred by the stage crew to setup blinds and our contract language, we do not need to or want to have blind auditions for the sub list. Please understand that in the event that we have too many candidates to hear in the allotted time, preference will be given to the local players.

The audition repertoire is as follows:

TUBA
Wagner, Meistersinger Overture.
Respighi, Fountains of Rome.
Prokofiev, Symphony #5.
Berlioz, Hungarian March.
Berlioz, Symphonie Fantastique.

EUPHONIUM
Strauss, Ein Heldenleben.
Strauss, Don Quixote.
Holst, Planets.
Mahler, Symphony #7.

The SSO will NOT be providing music until the audition. Candidates will need to secure the parts on their own. Cuts will not be announced until the day of the audition. The SSO does not provide reimbursement for travel or lodging expenses incurred to attend the audition or if the candidate is hired to perform with the orchestra.

The audition order will be determined on the day of the audition by random drawing, no exceptions or special accommodations will be made. Anyone interested in auditioning should submit a ONE PAGE resume via email to:
Scott.Wilson@SeattleSymphony.org" target="_blank

Please reference: TUBA/EUPHONIUM SUB LIST AUDITION ON THE EMAIL!

**Deadline for resumes is Saturday, November 23rd**
**No Tape auditions will be accepted**

We will try to accommodate all audition requests but, because of the short window of time allocated for the audition, we reserve the right to pre-screen candidates based on resume and experience.

Thanks for looking and I look forward to hearing everybody,
