Mouthpiece shank silver solder or cut off?

Post by Greg Lecewicz »

I'm redoing the Mt. Vernon with a split end of the shank. Would you solder it or cut 1/4 inch off ?Image

The best repair is to take the mouthpiece, mill the shank down its entire length to remove the damage, sleeve the shank, re-mill to taper and if some of length of the damaged metal was lost in the initial milling, re-mill the backbore. I had Jim at Kanstul do that for a cornet mouthpiece for me that my son especially liked, both for its tone, and its sentimental value of having been inherited from my uncle. It had the same type of damage you describe.
