based on that... I could not use her on a gig. not even close! However I always thought she was good on the finished recordings. Sad thing is we work with vocalists everyday that are way more talented than some of the modern produced mega stars of today but the public does not hear the different and can never imagine that us locals deserve any more than the cheapest possible scale. (reminder never go into music as a profession)
Back on subject...
Once a singer gave me a CD... it was great. Then I heard her live... it was OK. Then the more I heard her she did not have much to offer at all. I found out that at the time the CD was produced she was coached by a pro on every song. An example: once I coached a student on a few excepts for an audition CD . I tweaked every nuance. Re-recorded till every take was dead on. Result... the kid sounded great. I thought I was doing a great favor... later I realized I help produce a fake. Sometimes I think technology is great... sometimes I put pencil marks on my upright bass neck to hit a certain high note on a recording session. Once I had a tuner on my stand during a solo performance. I thought that was a great idea! Anything wrong with Brittney's tricks?... no, she uses technology to her advantage. I would not want to see her live useless I knew for sure she will be singing to tracks/ lip sync. That live intonation of hers could really screw up my ears. That bad singing did make me smile... thanks.
Which tuba solo c.d.s' engineers did NOT use autotune?
