I would respectfully disagree that it does not make you a better tuba player. Over the years, I have benefitted greatly from the advice I have received to questions asked, avoided mistakes as relayed by others, and I have made positive connections that have helped me solve problems, effect repairs, play better at gigs, and engage in instrument transactions, all to the betterment of my tuba playing.

Yes, we all waste too much time here on TubeNet. But just like a mine, in the midst of the effluent are always valuable nuggets.

I would encourage an approach of moderation, rather than prohibition.

Good luck and Happy New Year!

Sometimes you have to separate the wheat from the chaff.
There is a lot of worthwhile information on TubeNet, and a lot of good friends to be made.
The nonsense just needs to be overlooked (although that is part of the fun!)

NONSENSE? WHAT NONSENSE? WHERE?
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

This just about sums it up. Is it possible to spend too much time on TubeNet? Of course. Judicious use of one's time on this forum can be both informative and entertaining, as well as making it possible to find friends all over the country(or the world, for that matter).

Sadly... if I spent as many hours practicing here are home as I spend on TubeNet... it's highly unlikely it would make me a better tuba player!

TubeNet is a wonderful resource. If I didn't think so, I wouldn't be here.

Much of the 'real' information you'll find here isn't in books; it's stories of great players of the past, or shared knowledge about instruments, or common experiences onstage, etc. Despite the occasional silliness at TubeNet, it's a valuable resource. As has been said: just gotta separate the wheat from the chaff and leave all the personal nonsense aside.

Case and point -- before today, I never knew the meaning of the word "chaff." :P
