App has a very good music program. Obviously if they are playing at the ABA they can't be too bad. The tuba/euphonium instructor is Robert Clark. Mr. Clark is about 75 and has a wealth of information to share. In is younger days he performed with the Army Field Band (he doesn't like people to know this, but he actually sat ahead of Harvey Phillips). He has taught at the NC School of the Arts, UNC-Greensboro and I think at one time UNC-Chapel Hill. The majority of his life is was a high school band director and has produced some incredible bands. If you are looking for a degree in music ed. he is invaluable to study with. The studio is a good with probably 20 tubas/euph. One more thing. He is probably the kindest, most caring people I have know. Getting back to Appalachian, they have a great wind ensemble, the orchestra is definently improving under new leadership and there is also a 200 piece marching band. You should take a college day from high school and go check it out. Go on a night when the Wind Ensemble is playing. Good atmosphere, cool little town and not too far away from home.
