MP recommendation for a Cerveny CCB 601

Within the next two weeks, I will be picking up my new-to-me Cerveny. For those of you who have experience playing these horns, what kinds of mouthpieces work well for you? I will be using this horn in my school's orchestra. Now I know the first thing some of you will say is, "it's not the mouthpiece, it's the player." Yes, I know that, but we all know some mouthpieces make the job easier than others, and some horns are more MP sensitive than others. I own a Vincent Bach 22, a King 18, a Conn Helleberg, an Alan Baer Beltane, and a PT-88. Would any of these be a good starting point?

I think a Conn Helleberg is a good starting point for just about anything.

As much as I like the PT-88 on my larger horns, the 601 I had a chance to play seemed to really like the Helleberg better. The low range wasn't fluffy or unfocused.

When I owned a 601, the best match I found was a standard Helleberg or Conn Helleberg. I also used a heavyweight version (R&S) that worked very well too. Good luck!

I too, have owned a few of these and used a Conn helleberg with good results. They are thin brass horns and I always wanted to get a little deeper sound but that was before "heavy" style mouthpieces came on the scene. If you get some mouthpieces to try at the same time I think you'd be very pleased with a PT50+. It's got the V cup, always helps the clarity on a big Bb, and the extra metal darkens the sound. I've used one for several years now and won't be switching any time in the foreseeable future.But whatever you use, they are terrific horns. Ed
