Snedecor revised book

Post by Billy M. »

Recently, I was in the local band repair/music store and pulled out their collection of tuba studies drawer. I noticed a couple of the standards sitting in there (Robert King Kopprasch, Encore Bordogni, Tyrell) and pulled out the Snedecor Low Etudes book because mine suffered staple failure (rust sucks).

When I looked at it, I noticed things seeming a bit off and to my surprise the book appears to have been revised with a twentieth exercise labeled "from Janacek's Sinfionetta" marked as number XIX with the old XIX being moved to sit next to number IV and being marked "IV-A."

Does anyone know when this revision/addition took place? I haven't found anything scouring through the archives.

My understanding is that this is an old revision, but not really a revision at all. What I was told is that the extra etude was intended to be in the book from the beginning but the first run of copies did not have that etude included. The person that told me this also gave me a copy of the etude that I still have with my book. I'm glad they finally reprinted it with all the etudes, I may have to buy a new one. Great book!
My opinion for what it's worth...

I concur, it is a wonderful book that continually kicks my back side. I have noticed that with the "new/not new" version the crescendos and decrescendos are lighter in ink than in my version. Not that it would be a deal breaker, but since I have all but that one addition, I cannot justify the cost. Back to practicing! :tuba:
