Vaughn Williams 4th

Playing Vaughn Williams 4th soon. Sounds like a lot of good music. Not in my excerpt books. Any one got access to the part?

I don't think the parts are available, but you can buy the study score from Oxford Press. It's printed small, but you can see what you need to see.

And when you see it, you'll be glad you looked. That is one of the most difficult orchestral tuba parts I have ever seen.

I played this years ago. You need to look at it before you go because it's tricky . I'm always amazed that VW and Elgar don't feature very much in extract books, there are some very nasty surprises in both composers' music. All are playable but its good to be prepared rather than embarrassed at the first run through. Probably better on an F or E flat tuba. A rifle shot rather than a shotgun!

Great part to play. Did it a few years ago on BBb. Loved it!

Yep, you're going to be in for a surprise if you don't have a look at the part before the first rehearsal! Fun stuff.

And, as I remember, it requires a mute.

The V-W 4th does have quite an extensive part for tuba. Lots of little athletic sections and, like most V-W orchestral parts, lots of 4ths and 5ths. The third movement is particularly full of soloistic licks. There is a mute in the second movement. Lots of blowing in the outer movements.

In the old Walter Sear handwritten book, the excerpt is four and a half pages long, that's most of the meat of the part but out of context. I would recommend getting a score and hand writing the part because it is probably not available commercially.
