Long(ish) Term Instrument Storage

Post by DiveBomber »

I will unfortunately will be away from my instrument for several months. I try to take good care of my instrument to make it worth the investment I put into it so as a result I was wondering if there is a correct way to store the tuba. I have a safe place to store it but I am now wondering if is it best to disassemble (to prevent stuff from getting stuck), leave assembled or what? If I do leave assembled is there anyway to stop the slide grease from turning to glue when left to sit (in my experience that always seems to happen)?
Thank you in advance for any time spent in responding to this somewhat paranoid request.

I’d recommend a thorough cleaning and drying then lube it up with your favorite valve and slide oils. Avoid greases that dry out and get gummy. Everyone seems to have their favorites—these days I like Monster Oil. YMMV

I saw this video about oiling your valves for long term storage using Marvel Mystery Oil. He talks a lot about his sriracha sauce in the beginning but he gets to the important stuff at 4:24.
