BBb Helicon

Postby Schlepporello » Sat Jun 09, 2018 7:36 pm

Currently, I have seven tubas in my possession. Being that I live in a 750 square foot house, something's gotta give. It's time to free up some space in the living room. Up for sale is my BBb 4-valved Helicon which was built for me by the late Harvey Hartman. The horn was built from the following parts that I know of:
A silver-plated bell from an upright Holton EEb tuba.
The body from an old Conn Sousaphone, I don't recall the date or model.
The Valve cluster and journals from a Conn 4J upright tuba, I believe Harvey said was from 1964.
Valve caps and buttons from a 4-valved Jupiter sousaphone, nickel finished.
Harvey buffed the silver plating from the bell except for on the bell engraving and the inside of the bell. He spayed both with a lacquer finish, which seems to be preventing any tarnish build up with the exception of one small scratch in the bell. Included with the Helicon is 1 goose neck and 2 bits, a Bach 22 or 24 AW mouthpiece (which ever the buyer prefers) and a way cool stand that I bought for the Helicon to prevent me from setting it on the floor. The horn is still VERY playable and the plating is still very good on the valves. When Harvey built this, he took 90% of the dents out and I've only picked up a couple of small dings in the years I've owned it.
Price is $3000.
The helicon is located in Amarillo, Texas.

What a cool horn!
Looks like Harvey did a beautiful job.
I hope it finds a good home.

I didn't mention this, but this is one of the last horns that Harvey built before he passed away.

I have no idea, nor do I know how to check or where to check. The valve set and valve journals is from a Conn 4J if that helps your inquiry.

Beautiful horn. Guess you wouldn't be interested in a trade... :)
From what I could find on the interwebs, the Conn 4J has a bore size of .658".

No, with 7 horns at the house I really need to be selling some. And I figured an internet search could turn up some answers on the bore size. It's kind of hard for me to do the search myself when I'm driving a truck.
