Valve Set QuestionHow does one go about looking into getting a piston valve set? I know my way around rotors, but this will be the first set of BB pistons I have ever looked into purchasing. MW? Kanstul? Chinese? This would be to put on a Holton 345 body eventually...

Re: Valve Set Questionkey of C ?
piston ? 4+1 ? I sell those for $1800 with 1/2 down, and with the buyer understanding that there is a considerable wait. My mark-up is meager, just fwiw.
Re: Valve Set QuestionJoe, if it was a CC, I would have called you immediately! I love the JP CC valve set. I really would like to leave this baby in B-flat.

Re: Valve Set QuestionCan a CC valve set be pulled enough to make it a BBb?
I have a valveset that was cut for an F tuba on my Eb
Re: Valve Set QuestionThe tubing is in the same 1/2 mm bore gradations as the B&S/M-W European tubing.
I'm sure the slides could be taken apart, and re-fitted with extended and sleeved ferrules for proper B-flat lengths, but anyone who would like to do that would be on their own. That having been said, I could probably (??) order it with the removable slides stuck together but not soldered together. … And yeah, you would need some 19 mm bore tubing and some 19.5 mm bore tubing (again: compatible with eastern German tubing, so eastern German tubing would do the trick) to do the slides lengthening.
Re: Valve Set QuestionI'm talking about just pulling them until they are in tune. At least for the 1st and 2nd valves, the inner/outers are long enough
3rd and 4th, probably not
Re: Valve Set QuestionDid you miss my post (just above) about going back and lengthening the set of slides to each be long enough to be barely sharp (ex: 1/4" to 1-1/2" pull, depending on the slide) for a BBb instrument ?
Again, JP tubing is right at the same dimensional platform regarding this valveset (with inner diameters and outer diameters hitting whole and half millimeter measurements on the nose) as eastern German (B&S/Meinl-Weston) manufactured slide tubing, so eastern German tubing could be used to alter the JP valveset to a BBb valveset. Re: Valve Set QuestionJoe -- the factory doesn't make BBb valve sets?
Re: Valve Set QuestionThe valve set in question is off the JP HB21 clone I think... In that case, no BBb version.
Re: Valve Set Question
this. 1/ Someone may prefer to NOT extend C slides to make Bb length circuits. That's fine. 2/ If someone does NOT have the ability to do this (regardless of whether this would be an aesthetically-pleasing-to-them Bb valveset), perhaps they should not be considering purchasing a valveset, as the skills outlined above are very basic. These are very general comments, and directed towards no one. Anyone who has the down-payment, possesses a considerable amount (months worth) of patience, and is absolutely certain they would be able to pay off the balance upon arrival is welcome to order a C-lengths valveset from me.
Re: Valve Set QuestionMy question was simply, doesn't JP make a piston valve tuba, with a valve section in that style?
Seems like the answer is no. Which is fine... but just curious.
Re: Valve Set Question
I sincerely apologize for posting more than yes, no, or maybe.
Re: Valve Set QuestionI meant a BBb piston tuba... but by this point, it doesn't really matter.

Re: Valve Set QuestionIf it was in need of a BBb piston valve set, I would be looking on ebay for a king tuba with a crushed bell, recording bell, or even better, the recording bell that is Missing. Tell them to keep that hard case if it comes with one, and just ship the body. That would work, wouldn't it?
Re: Valve Set QuestionKing...as long as 11/16" bore is desired...and does not need to be rebuilt.
![]() JP is the common post-1980 European piston bore size (19mm - nearly 3/4") Conn was 47/64" Buescher was 93/128", which is a nice "just right/Baby Bear" bore size, but those valvesets are quite rare.
Re: Valve Set Question
Good idea for smaller tubas, but the bore (.687) is too small for the O.P.'s Holton 345 (.750). Again, I honestly think there would be a slightly brisker market for untubed 19mm/.748 bore 4 valve clusters, but maybe it's just me..... ![]() heyyeyaaeyaaaeyaeyaa
Re: Valve Set Question
Sam Gnagey has built some very nice 6/4 tubas with king .687 valve sections.
Re: Valve Set Question
Glad to hear that. In my opinion, it's too small.

Re: Valve Set Question
I'm sure I could supply those, and they would be much safer to ship. (I'd actually prefer to offer those for sale.)
Re: Valve Set Question
I'm not in a great rush, but would appreciate it if you could check on that possibility when you are sitting around bored, with nothing else to do. ![]() Some old Yorks, Martins and maybe a rotary King...
