Olds model O-98-4 four-piston front-action 5/4-size BBb recording bass $2950
=================================================================
- four major credit cards, check, or USPS money orders accepted.
- willing to ship (at buyers expense and buyers liability) via Greyhound GPX...or test and pick-up in-person.

=================================================================
- original shiny epoxy lacquer (not "mint" condition, but AMAZING condition)
- pistons/casing in virtually new/original mechanical condition with 100% nickel plating intact on pistons (no "rebuilt" pistons, and no worn pistons)
- no solder joints ever repaired
- picked over and made a bit better, mechanically (slide alignment tweaks) /acoustically (mouthpipe taper) than it was from the factory
- all original parts
- .689" bore / 22.65" detachable recording bell
- ORIGINAL HARD CASES INCLUDED (very rare) in very good condition
- (what's the thing they used to put in the ads...oh yeah! "ORGAN-LIKE TONE")
- ideal instrument for community bands, outdoor concerts, polka bands, jazz bands
- correct slide circuit lengths. None are too long. Upper #1 can be pulled out enough for a good 1&4 low E-flat
- adult-used instrument. All minor dents were expertly bloke-removed.

:arrow: OPTIONAL - at additional cost - upright bell (fabricated by bloke). assembled dent-free with no finish: $500 / add $250 additional for polishing & lacquering. This offer is ONLY available to the buyer of this tuba, and this bell is NOT negotiable as a "freebie". I would prefer to KEEP this part, as the 19-1/8" bell is a full-length Conn ("Lyon & Healy") bell that I would prefer to NOT cannibalize, but am willing to do so. Additionally, this bell (if built at additional cost) has been pre-tested, and DOES play at the same pitch level as the recording bell. See the LAST TUBA PICTURE below, BEFORE the hard case pictures. In the picture, the bell has not been built, but is laid together, so it can be seen what the bell would look like, and yes, the FACTORY upright bells for these were JUST AS TALL.

Here is the OPTIONAL (additional money) upright bell that I can build, if the buyer exercises this option:
The numbers show the pieces and parts that I would have to supply that I value (in addition to the considerable required labor).

Here are the amazing virtually factory-fresh pistons.
Notice the o.e.m. (half-century preserved) corks and felts...
...and no, I didn't even have to clean these pistons !

Wow! Love it!

Joe didn’t ask for my input (and he doesn’t need it), but I’ll offer it:

The couple of Olds 99 tubas I have tried played very well, and neither were in amazing shape like this one. If it plays as well as I imagine it does, this will be a fine tuba at a fair price. I wish it was within my budget to get it. I definitely have use for it.
All that, plus $8.00, will get you a venti at Starbucks.
Or in my case, a large can of Folgers.

no...The case pictures are still not up...
I'm cleaning old masking tape (and residue, etc.) off of the Tolex cortex.
I'll shoot several case pictures as soon as I'm happy with my cleaning job.

What is "Tolex"...??

Tolex is this:

CASE PICTURES ! Image
I guess I have an possible explanation as to why 99% of us who've seen an O-98 or an O-98-4 before have NEVER seen the set of hard cases that were offered with it. Check these out !!! I can't imagine this pair of cases costing less than an additional $150 - $200 in 1968 (adjusted for inflation: $1000 - $1500), so that possibly explains why the ONLY case set I've ever encountered with one of these instruments was military-owned. (Who else could have afforded the addition cost of these industrial-grade hard cases?) Yes, at fifty years old, their hardware and Tolex covering sports a bit of rust and wear, but these things are ready for several MORE decades of service.

me...?? I'm an "original case" nerd/fan.
I like the burgandy-alligator-look cases that housed the old King professional trombones, as well as the silver-alligator-look cases that housed the "Silver Sonic" (solid silver bell) King professional trombones (during the H. N. White era)...etc, etc., etc...

That having been said, when I carry around my own modern-era (costly) workhorse instruments, I carry them around in non-presumptuous-looking cases (no leather, no wild-colored fiberglass, no other type of pizzazz, etc.) so that - if a thief, somehow, gets past backstage security - they will steal someone's ELSE instrument. :P
