I READ the second trombone (on a small CC or F) and play the screamer notes 8vb.

Sounds great! I like the euph, it blends well and allows a lightness that would be very difficult by muscling the 2nd trombone part on an F tuba.

I performed this a few years back with a very good quintet and used F tuba on the 2nd trombone part, although with some modifications. Most of the piece I played as written, adding some of the lower octave from the tuba part ONLY when it was doubling the trombone part. The 8ths figure with the high A's that comes out of nowhere in the 1st mvnt and are unison with 1st trombone I believe I left out. The last page with the alternating triplets that AREN'T doubled I played as written, and it required much shedding and swearing.

I love this piece and put it up there with some of the best chamber music written for brass. Thanks for sharing.
