What is the "gold wash" material?

What is the "gold wash" material?
The helicon I acquired recently has a gold wash bell interior. While I've heard that description and used it over the years, I realized I don't know what the material actually is. Is it plated with something? Is it just the brass underneath? What's the best way to clean or polish it? Thanks!
