Tuba straps...

Post by Dylan King »

Does anyone know if the Meinl Weston tuba strap will work with a Yamaha YFB 621 F tuba? If not, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am not sure about the first part of the question, but i have a Blue Note strap that i use and am very pleased with it. They work on any tuba and are quite confortable once you find the ideal position. I know Baltimore Brass was selling them ( I think for $30-35)
Best of luck

Gary Swart wrote:For the MW strap to work on a tuba, there must be a ring on the bow and on the upper tube at about shoulder height. I don't think the 621 has these, but I can't say for sure. Of course a decent repairman can put the ring(s) on quite easily.
In leu of a ring on the bottom bow, I use another web strap from any shoulder-bag wrapped around the bottom bow a couple of times with the ends hooked together. Then... I hook my M-W harness into on of the hooks. As far as a ring at the top of the horn goes... the M-W harness has two straps at the top. I use both of them to stabilize my horn left to right. I hook the top harness hooks to whatever is available... like braces. The weight of the horn is carried by the lower hook. All the upper hooks to is provide stability. BTW... I intentionally removed the lower ring from my GDR stencil and went for the extra strap because I move around a lot and simply did not trust the lower ring to support this fairly large horn. Don't want things to fall apart when 'parading the hall' .

Meinl Weston lists this optional piece on their website for use with tubas without strap rings. It looks like it loops around the bottom bow and then hooks into the harness part with the metal "D ring" it has on the side.

I'd guess that it'd be a difficult (and perhaps expensive) to locate and purchase the actual Meinl Westson part, but that a similar item could be found in a luggage store or perhaps even around the house.

I use a snare drum sling with my 621. Standard POS strap with metal clasps... kind of like this

The 621 doesn't exactly weigh a ton, this gets the job done. I wear it on the strap even when I'm sitting on the gig, because the mouthpiece stays where it should. I know there's nicer kit out there, but mine was free.
