Quick note about Minneapolis and Cronkhite/Torpedo bags

Post by bort »

Unless you live under a rock, you've seen what has happened in Minneapolis over the last few days.

You may not realize, though, that Cronkhite/Torpedo bags is operated out of a building that is in this neighborhood -- maybe 2 blocks north of the 3rd precinct of the Minneapolis Police Department, which was set on fire last night.

I haven't heard any direct information about their company, but I do know that a bar 1 block farther north of them was burned down last night. (Accidentally, I drove past this bar earlier in the day yesterday, and saw them boarding up the windows. Ugh...). And yeah, just about everything else in the general area has at least been looted, if not burned down as well. It is amazingly horrible.

Also, tuba player and instrument repairperson Laurel Chapman is based in the Ivy Building, across the street from the burned-down bar, and right next to Torpedo/Cronkhite. I've heard from her, she is fine, but her building is smoky, and had some water damage from burning debris that landed on the roof and had to be extinguished. No looting at the Ivy Building though.

I hope that Cronkhite/Torpedo and Laurel Chapman can all get back to business soon enough, and get back to their important musical work. It's already been enough (too much!) with the pandemic, so the riots have just been the exact wrong amount of horribleness at an already difficult time.

PS -- my family is fine; things are tense here in downtown Minneapolis, but so far, they have been peaceful in this part of the city. Curfew in place starting at 8pm tonight, so hoping for a peaceful evening.

I corresponded with Steve at Torpedo yesterday, and his building was at that time undamaged. He's planning on reopening next week, and I hope he's able to do so at least for the sake of his workers.

I am glad to hear that. Great to hear an American manufacturer, small business owner and musician still has a viable business. And for purely selfish reasons, it was also good to hear.

Glad they are okay. I drove past it today... deceptively calm and quiet, and with a smattering of burned out buildings, plywood everywhere, etc

This city is a wreck. The governor and mayor are useless. Send in the military and national guard and take control again. I don't care if this post gets reported or blocked. This is horrible and ridiculous on every level. What a craptacular bunch of crap. George Floyd didn't deserve to die and the people in Minneapolis didn't deserve to lose their livelihoods. Pretty much every business I've been to in Minneapolis is busted, broken, looted, or worse. Enough is enough. Pray for Minneapolis, please. We need peace.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but tyrants do not allow peace until their enemies have been destroyed.

Take care!!

Stay safe, bort. If the unrest continues for much longer, you can always move -- you've done it before

Rizzo was a legitimate bad-a**. Nothing like Minneapolis would have happened on his watch. I wonder if a guy like that could ever get elected today?

Protesters attacked the Margaritaville in downtown Nashville after burning the courthouse. What has Jimmy Buffett ever done to anybody? :?:

Yeah, but you figure a move from Baltimore to Minneapolis is going in the right direction, vis a vis the likelihood of racial unrest.

Here in little old Reno, we've had mostly peaceful protests but things did get out of control Saturday night with some idiots (not involved with the protests) breaking windows and burning things. I was really depressed to hear that someone had taken off with the flag from the WWII ship the USS Reno that was displayed in our city hall. Just as I was about to give up on humanity, this story broke yesterday.

I’m interested in how my angst ridden, navel gazing, deep state neighbors plan on telling Black Chiefs of Police and Mayors to end their systemic racism. But I’ll keep an open mind....
