New miraphone 188

Post by MikeMason »

I got to play one on Friday. It really exceeded my expectations. I guess I’ve played one only 1 other time many years ago and my feelings were”meh”. An incoming student has one and asked me to play it. It played great. I was expecting low register push-back but it was minimal to “just a different blow”. Beautifully made. Great sound. No problems in any register. I really see the appeal now. It did not leave me wanting one, but definitely feeling I could make everything I do work very well if I owned one. So yes, miraphone has “still got it”. :tuba:

I have one of each of those (1960's 186-4u CC tuba and a 1980s 188-5u CC tuba). They are indeed very different and both are a joy to play. I bought a new Elektra gold brass 6 valve F tuba earlier in the year, and it is a fantastic horn. Super happy with all three of them, as well as my Eastman 836 York copy.
