Solo counterpart to PT-50+?

There are a couple that I'm aware of. The Laskey 30F is a shallower Helleberg-style 'piece, as is the Marcinkiewicz H4; the Laskey has a slightly smaller cup ID than the PT-50 (and smaller throat diameter), whereas the Marc has a larger cup ID (and about the same throat diameter).

I find my PT-36 works very well in the upper register and the lower register. The upper range seems a lot better than my 50 gave me, because of the lighter tone from the 36. I use my 50 for orchestras now, and the 36 for everything else. It may not have a different cup depth, but the rim is more narrow than the 50's, giving better flexibility with the mp. Works like a charm for me, just my 2 cents.

Why donÂ´t you just choose any convenient mouthpiece more suitable for soloing and set aside any thoughts about different rims ?
As long as you get used to switching back and forth some times during a practice session you should be fine.

Hey...

I used the same setup, but now that I've graduated they get to keep the Miraphone.

I've played on the PT-50 for over a decade and the PT-50+ for about two years now. Keep working on the range with that mouthpiece and you will not be sorry. It gives a truly rich core to the upper register.

I've used a PT-50 for several years on my CC tubas, and find that it is a pretty good mouthpiece for high notes as well as mid and low range notes. The piece took me up to F above the staff fairly comfortably, and the tone up there was good. Beyond that F, however, things got difficult for me. Some Berlioz pieces require really high range-----for those I switched to a Wick 3L on the CC tuba.
