In my opinion, this forum benefits from having members who sometimes lurk but seldom post, and the forum probably would see some of those individuals leave if they had to bother renewing their registrations on a regular basis.
I'm not sure what problem you want to address with this. If the perceived problem is a lack of available user names, I don't agree that is a significant problem. If the perceived problem is difficulty in looking up a particular poster, then the problem is with the search tools (although I think the tool to search for individual posters works pretty well). If the perceived problem is spammers setting up accounts for fake postings, I think the moderator has done a pretty good job of keeping that in check.
Is your concern with one of those problems, or something else?

The subject has come up many times, and 'sheddin is taking care of it...tubashaman wrote:I remember a few weeks back I saw the newest user was a viagara spammer...
READ THIS THREAD
The people you see as the latest registered have only STARTED that process... and Sean has done a great job of making sure they don't make it all the way in!

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

I don't know why, but you struck a nerve. So... I'm going to crawl out of my lurker's hole to comment.JPNirschl wrote:Perhaps there could be established a non-posting, read-only membership for those types. But gee, it can't be that hard to log in and post a 'Yeah, I agree with him/her' every so often, can it?
(admittedly from someone who should have a picture avatar too, but hasn't done it)

First, I appreciate Sean's and others' time and effort to make this board possible. Over the years he has been pretty fair-handed at dealing with issues that have come up. Thanks Schlep for not deleting me!
Second, I share with members of this board my interest in making music with my instrument of choice, a tuba. I don't have the genes, the educational experience, instrument engineering background, number of tubas, or vast playing experience to make regular, intelligent contributions to many of the threads here. I also don't feel the need to publicly express my political leanings, religious beliefs, economic theories, or environmental views.
I see no value to my popping my words into the board unless they make a contribution so you won't see me just saying "I agree or disagree", who really cares what my opinions are. But, I read this board at least daily to see what others have written. My contributions have been to buy equipment, tell other tuba players what I have learned from reading this board, and to learn from others' mistakes. If this is not enough "payment" to be allowed to continue to be a member so be it.
By the way JPN, you and I agree on one thing. Liberalism is not a political affiliation. I just think it should be a way of life.

It's a bit like if you attend an AGM (annual general meeting) of an organisation. The same few people always talk, while the majority just listen.iiipopes wrote:A lot of people are shy about posting.
Most people do seem shy about expressing their views. But it does not follow that you don't want them there. One day something may come up on a subject which they can make a valuable contribution.
People can still enjoy TubeNet without posting. I have been surprised at how many UK tubists which never post here seem to have read my posts!

As a long-time lurker who checks in daily:
Please, don't ditch the true aficionados when you toss the trolls.
The management of this site is tremendous, and under-celebrated.
I'll hoist one to you this weekend, in my pup tent by the (not-quite-swim-able) Northern Atlantic, and as soon as I get home, after a quick pee, and probably a car repair, I'll read the latest postings.
The joy and community you provide for those of us who see every band from the back is immeasurable.
Deepest Thanks.

One reason so many spambots register is that for the word "tuba," the bots can't distinguish between the name of the brass musical instrument we all play and the surgical procedure acronym for trans umbilical breast augmentation. This is not a joke. This is an actual medical acronym.

Sometimes other interests get in the way. Not always by choice.
I've followed along for a few years without posting much, but still around.
He Norm, you're crazy. Liberalism is a mental disorder

Sean, I see the old hidden group is listed in the Control Panel.
Thinking it might be fun to open it back up...
It was a lot of fun in '04.
