I am not talking about the game. I am talking about the national interest in these two teams. Just because they are in Boston and New York (sort of) everyone up there thinks that the whole country ought to be interested. I know this. I used to live up there and attended three games of the 1986 World Series and made the trip out to California for the 1987 Superbowl.
Dallas and Green Bay have FAR larger national fan bases. The Giants are strictly local and the Pats are sort of national, but mostly in a "I hate the Patriots" way. They have not yet achieved the popularity nor the infamy of the Cowboys. (Lots of Cowboys haters out there.) You see Packers and Cowboys gear all over the country and world. You see Giants gear in New York, by and large. Get what I am saying? I am not certain that I said that very clearly. Oh well …
As I said, in a national interest sort of way, this is as much a "Snoozerbowl" as would be a "Subway Series" between the Yankees and the Mets. All of NYC would be frothing at the mouth over that situation, as we all know. And as we all ALSO know, NYC is the center of all things that matter. There is that little town Called LA. New Yorkers often consider the entire US between those two towns to be a vast desert devoid of people and even of all life. (Kidding. I thought that while I lived in NYC. The locals taught me the proper way to think of America!)
Anyway, this will probably be a very decent game, despite the track record of Superbowl match-ups producing some pretty boring football. I suppose I will root for the hated NY Giants instead of the MUCH hated Patriots.
Go, Giants … I guess … ($1 to the great Red Green.)
I would agree for the most part, however, there is one thing that makes this game very intriguing nationally: the Patriots are 18-0. Everyone is going to take interest, because there is a chance at history being made. There is going to be plenty of interest for this game--more than usual, I think. But I will agree, little to none of it has anything to do with the Giants.
The reason teams like the Packers, Cowboys, Yankees, and Red Sox get such national followings is because they are "storied" teams, they've had lots of legendary players, and have won several championships. The Giants don't have that. The Patriots are building that as we speak, and will be a powerhouse, in terms of popularity and merchandise, for a while, especially if they pull this 19-0 thing off.

I'm sure I will tell you this in person before you actually read it, but here it is anyway.
I will be getting chips at that point in the festivities.

I wonder, though. If it were, say, Minnesota that was currently undefeated going into the Super Bowl, and they had that little 'scandal' about taping an opponent's sideline early in the season, would they be generating nearly as much bile and rancor as the Patriots? I keep hearing this constant chorus of "I Hate the Patriots" seemingly for no other reason than fans of other teams desparate wish to be in the same position. Yes, I dislike Dallas, but that's because I'm an old Redskins fan, and if you're a 'Skins fan, hating Dallas is simply part of the equation based on years and years of mutual animosity. I can see Jets fans (or possibly Colts fans) having a dislike for NE, based on geography and history, but that's where it should, for all intents and purposes, end.

Hey, I dislike Dallas³; I'm in the middle of multiple animosities (Eagles, Giants, AND Nativeamericans)!
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Interesting point. Part of the utter dislike of the Patriots I think also stems from the fact that the mastermind behind all of the success is Bill Belichek, who comes across as a cold and largely unlikable man. (I can't stand him, but that's because he resigned as head coach of my team after 1 day). I think he turns a lot of people off, and gets them rooting against the Patriots...the videotaping thing made it even worse.

Yes, I know Belichek has all of the warmth and charm of an iguana, and studied press conference procedures with the CIA, but since when has that been a prerequisite for being a successful coach? I don't remember Tom Landry or Vince Lombardi being known for their people skills, yet they are (almost) universally beloved.

Hell, I don't even like professional football (haven't watched a game since Elway left the Broncos) and I HATE Dallas. The world begins and ends for me with NATIONAL League Baseball (the DH is for sissies or fat men past their prime). I am an avid Braves fan, but since TBS isn't going to air their games anymore, the Padres or Dodgers will be the team on my TV on the back patio. Beer and Baseball, nothing says the end of the school year quite like that!!!!!

Also what's with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers doing halftime??? Who books this stuff? Of all the pop acts in the last 20 years who would ever book Tom Petty to do the superbowl??
Did I miss something somewhere. I mean I was never a big fan so perhaps I missed something but did he have many big hits or number one songs? I know he has been around forever and has some songs on the radio but I never considered him a superstar. He always sounded like he was high to me. (and I don't mean sharp)
Please someone shed some light on this for me. I guess it can't be any worse that Prince... or janet jackson's wardrobe malfunction.... or when Kiss performed at the Olympics. That one really had me scratching my head too..... The Olympics are about doing your best and being top athletes and representing all that is good and they get "I want to rock and roll all night and party everyday!?" and freaks dressed like mimes on LSD. There is a real wholesome message and image to send to kids!
go figure.

I get a kick out of people who rag on tom Brady and the Patriots. Don't get me wrong, I really couldn't care less, but here is one of the greats of the game in the past decade and people rag on him and say he really isn't all that good and that if he didn't have a good line in front of him he wouldn't be half as good. and that they are cheaters, etc. (like no one else does it. why do you think the coaches are always covering their mouth wi=hen they talk to their players?) Get a life! Its football for cryin out loud! it ain't gonna get us out of a recession or cure cancer or do anything that really matters in 5 years.
Maybe they got Tom Petty mixed up with Tom Brady?

I guess Tom Petty was chosen because he is one of the few acts with name recognition who probably is too feebed out to display a "wardrobe malfunction" during half time. I can't think of any younger celebs that wouldn't jump at a chance to flash America and the rest of the world.

Although, seeing Tom Petty's breasts would be far more offensive than Janet Jackson's
