Bob, with all due respect, that's a middle school beginner or quintet horn, not a horn you'd necessarily take to a college concert band unless it's all you can muster.

yeah, ive seen that horn and other similar ones that are beginner designed and such, but for the lesser price, id rather not have what every middleschooler is playing. But, thanks for the input.

Knock 40% off the sale price and that's a good guess.

However, an Allora 186 might be a horn that you would hold onto for awhile. It is supposed to be an OK horn and might be the only horn a hobbyist ever needed.

I would agree that paying $900 for a King 2340 from Dan might be a better value if you think you might want to trade up anytime soon. You could sell it for that much when you are done with it.

King 2340s (3v BBb front loader usually with recording bell) are frequently on eBay. Most all of them come with cases and are refugees from bandrooms. They are frequently in acceptable condition because they do have cases. I think much of the damage in school horns comes from transporting them on school busses and what not without cases. One of my buddies played a Miraphone 186 in school band and carried it everywhere in the trunk of his car. One guy in particular has nightmares remembering when Joe stuck the bell of the 186 over the guy's head and blasted "Smoke On The Water" at a pot party one night... The Miraphone got pretty beat up...

I digress....

I bought a 2340 with cases for $430 off eBay and had the bell cleaned up for another $40, bought a mouthpiece and called it good.

Dan primarily ships Greyhound bus, so it should be pretty cheap as close (relatively speaking) as you are. That being said, maybe you should take a bus ride down to him and toot around on what he's got there. Give him a call.

Scenario two: buy something that fits the bill on eBay and then have Dan fix whatever ends up being wrong with it. That said, repairs may quickly eat away your small budget, so you're probably better of buying something in known good shape.

For non-performance major level concert band, a 4/4 3v horn would probably be fine and be more in your budget. Is it more fun to have four valves? Yeah, most of the time. Is it necessary for almost all concert band lit? Most of the time not really.

P.S. Seriously consider the 1240/2340 if you can get over the "stigma" of a bell-front horn. My fellow musicians walk right by a Rudi 5/4 CC (5v) and a Conn 3J CC (4v) in our concert band and just gush over how they love the sound of my three-banger, bell-front King. Then again these are mostly older folks.

to me it looks like a Miraphone 186 imitation. Does anyone have any experience with one of these? I am in the same boat looking for my first BBb tuba. I could afford a new 186 but my wife would kill me. So I am also looking for something affordable that plays well and in tune. Nice used BBb Miraphones are hard to find.

What about all the Amati, Allora, Dallyan and Schiller & other inexpensive tubas??? And then there are the intermediate priced ones like Cerveny and St Petersburg. Are any of these tubas worth owning for enjoyment?

And why are BBb tubas so scarce and CCa nd F tubas seem more plentiful.

Probably just seems that way since you are looking for a BBb right now. This site probably has a higher percentage of CC and F horns for sale vs. the market as a whole.

the only reason i really want 4v is because we play 4v horns in corps and id rather be playing something as similar as I can, disregarding, of course, the tuning tendancies of dynasty contras...

I paid $1900 for the Allora AA186 (with case) played it for a year, had it chem cleaned and sold it for $1800 so I'd say I got my money out of it. It really was a good horn for the money and I'd still have it had I not decided to go the Eb route.
