Schilke 67 Tuba Mouthpiece question

Post by tofu »

Bought a Schilke 67 mouthpiece way back in 1971 from Renold Schilke when I was in 8th grade for my Rudy Meinl and really liked it. He was very nice and patient spending an hour with a young kid who wasn't quite sure what he wanted. Even let me try a couple of tubas he was handbuilding at the time.

Had the 67 shaved down in 1981 to fit a Besson small european receiver. Thought I would now get another to fit a standard receiver.

When I went and looked at sites the current Schilke 67 & 66 in no way resemble my 67. My mouthpiece looks very similar to the Denis Wick 2 I also have for the Besson and the Conn 2 that came with the new King 2341 I bought last year. The outside is basically a big v and the rim is big and cushioned. The new mouthpiece that I've seen resembles the Conn Helleberg on the outside with a thin rim.

When did Schilke change the design and is there any similarity between the old 67 and the current 67?

Besides the Denis Wick line and the Conn 2 that I already have are there any others that might be similar to my old 67 that I should consider?

Thanks

If you like it that much, there are some companies out there who will digitize it and reproduce it back to the original shank size.

I want to know more about this. I have both the current 67 and old style 67. Not sure How different They are besides the weight difference.
Tell me more.

Maybe you could tell us?

I guess there's a chance that the Schilke 67 internal parameters changed over the years, which would certainly affect how it plays, but would that have happened at the same time as the external change? Maybe not. I personally think the old shape looks cool, though.
