An American In Paris

I play princiapl tuba for the Georgai Philharmonic. We did American In Paris this weekend, and it went pretty well.

I used this site for info on interpretation, seeing stories on conquering nerves, etc., for the (in?)famous solo in the Gershwin.

Anyway - I was pleased with my performance given nerves, etc., and like many amateurs on here, and just happy to have the privelege to play it (on a PT 6, incidentally).

It was recorded for GA public TV, so I may post the snippet of the solo so y'all can throw darts at it - but also thought that would be something people should do in the future - I'd have loved to hear other renderings aside from the usual pros, both good and bad - why don't we do more of that on here? It'd actualyl be cool to have a board jsut for that - sorted by the piece, so we could share renderings. Jsut a thought...

Anyway - I was pleased with my performance given nerves, etc., and like many amateurs on here, and just happy to have the privelege to play it (on a PT 6, incidentally).

I played it in a band transcription (the solo was identically the same) and splattered all over half an octave. I had so much adrenalin flowing by the time it arrived that I could hardly think and breathe.

I used to play polka solos in front of hundreds without really a second thought, with stuff four times as technical and over an octave higher.

On this occasion, though, my nerves went haywire.

Since then, things have been calmer. I'm thinking that concert was an outlier that I hope does not repeat itself.

The only other time I was as nervous was when the TubaMeisters played a college recital. We decided that since we were on a long-hair stage, we could play a little long-hair music, so we started with a tuba quartet transcription of the Fanfare from La Peri, and then played an arrangement (by Ray Grim) of Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, with me playing the big opening horn solo on F tuba. As we walked out onto the stage, I occurred to me that I'd sat in that very auditorium ruthlessly judging others who had performed there, and the thought that others might judge me with my own standards was too much to bear. I got through it, but there was some unplanned vibrato in those first few minutes until the adrenalin settled down.
