Hotsprings Music Festival seeks Tubists

Post by Mike Forbes »

Hi all,

I have recently been invited to serve as faculty tubist for the Hot Springs Music Festival in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Back in 1996-1998, I performed with the group in their beginning years. I had to abandon the fabulous event in order to fulfill my Army Band busy summer obligations, but now with my gig at Illinois State, my summers are free and I'm simply thrilled that I've been invited back to serve as a faculty member at this great festival.

I am able to accept 2 tubists (and perhaps 1 euphoniumist--especially if they have trombone chops) to serve as apprentices at the festival and share in the repertoire below, other works not mentioned, and a large chamber music component.

The festival this summer goes from June 4-18 and in addition to other rep., we're playing Tchaik 6, Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms, and a wild arrangement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony done by no one other than Gustav Mahler (8 horns, 4 trombones and TUBA)!! It's a feast for the ears.

If accepted, apprentices will receive a full scholarship to the event AND free housing...your only expense will be food (and Spaten served at the BeerGarten in town).

The website listed here has all the details regarding applications, repertoire, etc.

Please email me for further information, as well.

What age tubists are you looking for, exactly? This looks very interesting, but I couldn't find any info on the site pertaining to any age limits or requirements.
Thanks, Aaron H.

Great question. While there is no limit, the average age of apprentice participants is 24. The minimum age is 18, but there is not amaximum age.

Thanks,
Mike

I'll be working on it right now!

Applications

Post by Mike Forbes »

Hi all,

I just received word from the festival that only 2 tubists have applied! I must have answered some 25 emails regarding this festival. I simply urge you to apply (SOON!) if it interests you. The initial response has been great, I just hope people will follow through with putting a CD together--it doesn't even necessarily need to be stuff recorded FOR this application--you could just send in stuff from your senior recital, etc.

Also, any euphoniumists out there that would like some orchestral trombone experience--this could be a great opportunity for you. I'm not saying you'll be given preference, per sé over non-doubling trombonists, but the festival is eager to have a tuba/euphonium quartet within its ranks. I'll play euph. in the quartet along with 2 tubists and perhaps a trombonist who doubles on euph or vice-versa.

Please get those tapes in if you're still interested in a great, FREE festival (room and tuition included).

NO, what I meant was since the music festival he is advertising about is playing Mahler #3, I put ahh, Mahler #2, just to add to the flavor of the conversation. Look at his web site he has put up for the festival, then click 2006 events, and scroll all the way down, you will see they are doing Mahler #3, so thats why I just added that little thing in.

Ok, now I'm confused!

Post by Mike Forbes »

Okay, now I'm confused. I didn't know anything about Mahler 3 for this year, but I do recall that they did it last year...I just don't want to confuse anyone--we're doing Mahler's arrangement of Beethoven 9 this year, but unfortunately, no Mahler 3.

Thanks,
Mike
