Vintage Conn BBb 4 Valve

Post by Gongadin »

I've been asked to play a lot of shows with a band (not on tuba) but I'll have to purchase some extra equipment.
It is with regret, therefore, that I am testing the waters to see if anyone desires my early Conn BBb, four front piston valves, upright one-piece (non-detachable) bell, bare brass.
It comes with a modified case (this hardcase was originally for an instrument with top-mounted valves) that should be fine for shipping purposes. The instrument was recently mechanically overhauled by (Ron) Partch Brasswinds, and this Conn tuba has a glorious bottom end.**
I'd like to get about $3200.
Pictures and measurements to follow for those interested.
It's not the instrument in my avatar...that's a top-mounted valve Besson.
**So there, bloke.

Conn Pictures!

I put together a basic "Angelfire" page and posted the Conn pictures there.
Here's the URL;

This is not the model Rudy copied. He copied what is commonly (for a rare instrument) referred to as the Helleberg model. This insttument appears to be much larger than the instrument you are asking about.

Too Large?

Post by Gongadin »

I think that the pictures I posted might give a false sense of size.
I don't believe this is a 6/4 instrument; with the risk of alienating the person who's patiently waiting for bore measurements (I just borrowed a digital caliper....you'll have them tonight!) I think I will post reference pictures; I will post pictures of the horn being played by a player.
Probably me!
That should give a proper reference scale for size.
Hey...if it IS a 6/4, I'm going to use that as a marketing tool! ;)

Comparing the photos to those at the Conn Loyalists' website this horn appears to be a Conn 32J 4-valve, front action BBb bass, that was discontinued in 1929.
The Conn "Monster" BBb Grand Basses are the Tuba Grands of the world. The artistry of design and superb blowing qualities which these instruments possess have given them the place of honor in all the bass family. They are not given unusually wide bells to give the appearance of a tone they do not possess, but are built with the scientific accuracy for which all Conn instruments are noted, and the bells are proportioned to the rest of the instrument.

Magic Price?

Post by Gongadin »

Impending eBay sale, probably before this coming weekend.
Just thought I'd give one last kick at the can (not calling this horn a 'can', or anything) before I let it go afloat in the 'Bay.

Bloke alluded to the fact that I seem to be getting closer to "the magic price" - if anyone wants to submit offers, I'll be open to considering them.

Appreciatively,
Steven

Interesting BBb. An upright bell would draw a crowd.
