Deaf composers?

Postby knuxie » Tue Jun 15, 2004 12:23 am

I brought this question to a composers forum and they thought I was crazy. Are there or have there ever been noted composers who were born deaf? The music would definitely be divinely or mentally inspired. No outside influence or awareness of what modern historians expect of today's writing style. I would be curious to listen to such a product.

Interesting question, Ken. I certainly don't know the answer, but I agree with your logic.

You should check out Evelyn Glennie's website for her take on deafness. Deafness does not mean inability to hear, it just means your ears don't work. Your whole body hears, your ears just do the most visible part(is that a pun?).

Evelyn Glennie can't hear with her ears, hasn't since she was kid.. but she has perfect pitch, and an amazing sense for acoustics(she can tell the acoustics of a room by how "thick" the air is).. she's a world class percussionist who's performed with the world's best orchestras, and an amazing composer.

oh yeah, and she's GORGEOUS.
