Obscure solos, anyone?

Does anyone here know of any good lesser-known pieces out there? I'm always looking for a good read, and I seem to be finding more of the standard canon these days, (not that that's a bad thing.) Thanks, Aaron "Tubafatness" Hynds
P.S., I'm looking for something around a Grade 5+/6, and for CC tuba.

Not very many...

I do believe that the late Alfred Reed wrote a piece for CC Tuba/ Double Bass called "Fantasia a Due" for the 1972 international tuba conference, but its not too great of a piece.

Kansas City Dances, Holsinger.
Often played on F, but written for Steve Seward on CC tuba. Steve has recorded it on his huge 5/4 Rudy.

I remember the first tuba solo I ever played in recital:

"The Voice of the Viking" by David Bennett

It's an old-fashioned air and variations, written in 1939. It was published by Carl Fischer. I would rate this about a grade 4-5 solo (6 being very difficult).

my tuba professor is having me work on this solo right now titled "Hieronymus" i cant remember the composer but its a 3 mvmt unaccomp solo that is based off three paintings by hiernymus bosch its a very doable peice and alot of fun to play

There is also a beautiful tuba solo by Alexander Tcherepnin called Andante (op. 64). Tcherepnin was a Russian composer living in Paris with his beautiful Chinese wife. All of these factors can be sensed in this piece.

I played this for my senior recital in college. The range goes up to a D above the staff but is very comfortable and, overall, it is an audience pleaser.

I would MOST DEFINITELY recommend solos by Ken Friedrich. His music is just great! Also there are some great solos by Elizabeth Raum. Good luck and happy hunting!!
