Shostakovich!!!
The music from The Gadfly is awesome!
If he doesn't count, I would have to go with big JW or Michael Kamen.<-Field of Dreams

Whew! Glad someone said Goldsmith before I got here! His music literally saved one or two Star Trek movies. And Cliff Eidelman's work on Star Trek VI is just awesome.
Whoever did the music for Boondock Saints should have gotten an Oscar. I've got some of the mp3's on my computer, but oddly I can't seem to find the soundtrack (or composers name) anywere online...
Not so much "film", but Bear McCreary is doing awesome stuff on the new Battlestar Gallactica over there on Sci-Fi. Music is almost as good as the show, which happens to be the best on tv.
And of course John Williams, James Horner, Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer.

Some recent new blood to add to the list of "usual suspects" - Michael Giacchino. Hand-picked by Spielberg to score the Medal of Honor game series. Absolutely first-rate stuff, with some amazing brass writing! Loved his work on the Incredibles, and looking forward to seeing what he churns up for MI3.

One of my favorites because of his wide range of styles is Randy Newman. The big home run scene in The Natural stands out in my mind. I also like the ragtime and jazz tracks he wrote for various movies.

And my 10p's worth...............
Thomas Newman - American Beauty
Trevor Jones - The Last of the Mohicans (not so keen on the Randy Edelman half of the movie)
Howard Shore - Lord of the Rings
Micheal Kamen - Band of Brothers
Music for the Movies is condensed emotion - if you need to do any listening with children try the film soundtracks, you have everything in the human experience (in 15.5 seconds flat.....).
For what its worth

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
